Our Chapter has a long history. Horeb Chapter #3 was formed in Worthington, Ohio, on March 18th , 1815, by Worthington's founder, James Kilbourne, with a dispensation from Alexander McCormick, the Deputy Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
On October 24th , 1816, the Grand Chapter of Ohio was formed in Worthington by delegates from American Union Chapter of Marietta, Cincinnati Chapter of Cincinnati, and Horeb Chapter.
In 1820, New England Lodge #4 and Horeb Chapter #3 constructed the Lodge building at 634 High Street in Worthington.
During the "Cerneau" episode (1891-1893) Horeb Chapter embraced "Cerneau Masonry" and fell out of favor with the Grand Lodge of Ohio and Grand Chapter of Ohio resulting in its charter being arrested. A new Horeb Chapter was charted on October 3rd , 1891 and met in the home of Horace W. Wright at 137 E. Dublin-Grandville Road in Worthington, now the Sharon Memorial Hall. Upon Horace Wright's death in 1893, the Chapter moved to Westerville, Ohio.
In 1899 the renegade Horeb Chapter relenquished its rights to the Worthington Lodge Building and effectively ended Capitular 'Cerneau Masonry' in Ohio. The re-chartered Horeb Chapter #3 continued to meet in Westerville.
In 1924 a new Chapter was opened in Worthington: Horace W. Wright #226, and met in the 1820's Lodge building until the new Grand Lodge building was constructed on the adjacent lot in 1955.
In 2014 the 1820's lodge building and the adjacent Grand Lodge building were sold and Horace W. Wright #226 moved to the Northland Temple in 2015. Shortly thereafter, Horace W. Wright #226 and Westerville's Horeb #3 merged. The newly merged chapter was renamed as Horeb-Wright #3.
In 2016 The Northland Temple was also put up for sale, and in January, 2017 Horeb-Wright #3 moved to Sunrise Lodge in Gahanna, where it continues to meet.
As one of the three oldest chapters in Ohio, members of Horeb-Wright #3 are proud of our heritage. We have long been active in the 11th Capitular District as officers and workers. Our own Dan Smith is a Past Grand High Priest (2021) of Royal Arch Masons in Ohio, and much progress in technology, infrastructure, education and organization has been made in Ohio Capitular Masonry during GHP Smith's time in the Grand-East.
Horeb-Wright #3 intends to grow in the coming year and offer interesting educational insights into Capitular Masonry, fun fellowships and dinners, and expanded communication with our members.
If you are a Master Mason in good standing in Central Ohio, and have been considering joining the York Rite, please consider Horeb-Wright Chapter #3. Contact Us any time for more information!
